Activity 4: Two-dimensional Materials and Sculpture in the Round
Purpose:
To create sculpture that feels massive from simple materials.
Materials:
Several pieces of paper and cardboard of various dimensions, glue or staples
Method:
A) Select several pieces of paper of varying dimensions. Alter these shapes by bending, curling, scoring, slitting, and/or perforating them. Join the sheets so that they produce structures with interesting spatial relationships. (Fig. 9.4A)
B) Using cardboard (mat board or illustration board) make three simple forms such as cubes or pyramids that have flat planes. Experiment with various arrangements of these three shapes to create one sculptural volume; you can cut holes into the planes to create voids. Interpenetrating these planes can be effective, if you plan it carefully. (Fig.9.4B)
